Reported from Yen Ming Temple on April 25, 2025. Yen Ming Temple invited Master Liantai Vajra, who came to Melbourne to preach, to give a Buddhist lecture. The lecture  topic was “Smoke Offering”.

The master first introduced the significance and types of True Buddha School offerings. The master said that tantric offerings are a very important method to accumulate merit for practitioners and eliminate obstacles in practice. There are many ways of offering, including Mandala offering, fire offering, tsog offering, water offering, smoke offering and so on.

The master then introduced the benefits of smoke offering compared to other offering methods. The master introduced that smoke offering is relatively convenient for lay Buddhists to practice, and because smoke offering is a method of offering with Four-Armed Avalokitesvara as the main deity, and Avalokitesvara is very compassionate, it is easier for practitioners to respond to this method.

The master continued to introduce the target person of the smoke offering. The smoke offering method can be used to offer to Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, or to the practitioner’s own enemies, relatives, and creditors. In the morning, perform smoke offering to Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. In the afternoon, perform smoke offering to your enemies, creditors, and spirits that haunt you. The smoke offering also includes food, clothing, shelter and transportation. Practitioner needs to visualize them.

Practitioners should eliminate their own obstacles and offer sacrifices to their enemies, creditors, and spirits that are haunting them. When offering sacrifices to enemies, creditors, and haunted spirits, you should not offer them in front of the altar, but move the incense burner outdoors. If there is no outdoor space, you can put it on the balcony or outside the window.

The master then used some vivid examples to explain the definition of enemies, relatives and creditors. Enemies, relatives and creditors refer to the people against whom one has grudges or debts in past lives, and refer to all sentient beings who have grudges against one in the cycle of reincarnation. The master encourages everyone to practice smoke offering on a daily basis and not wait until the karma comes. Practicing on a daily basis can help practitioners resolve resentful karma, increase merit, and make everything auspicious.

The master also explained in detail the ritual of smoke offering, the appearance of the deity, mantras, visualization and mudras, as well as precautions.

Finally, the master answered everyone’s questions regarding the practice of smoke offering. The Dharma lecture ended successfully amid applause.

Note: Yen Ming Temple has smoke offering furnaces, Four-Armed Avalokitesvara images and smoke offering incense. Everyone is welcome to inquire and purchase.
